Komoda Store and Bakery*
3674 Baldwin Avenue, Makawao, Hawaii 96768‎
This historic multi-generational Japanese bakery is a must stop, must taste experience.Try a mouth watering cream puff or guava-filled malasadas or anything else that is still available. The simple dinner rolls are sweet and melt in your mouth. A plastic bag of a dozen for $8 will not make it back to the cottage if you have more than 3 people in the car. Better come early as they often sell out of almost anything. There are tables and a pot of coffee brewing most mornings (pay by the honor system). Open at 7 AM most days, closed on Wednesday. Usually open till 5 but closed by 2 on Saturday.

The Rodeo General Store*
3661 Baldwin Ave, Makawao, HI 96768
Go in and explore this unique store. The front looks like something from the old west. Lots of sandwiches and takeout (both hot and cold) greet you at the door. The big surprise is the best wine cellar in Upcountry—an unrivaled selection in a special climate controlled room. If you love wine it’s hard not to go home with a bottle of something special.

Makawao Garden Café
3669 Baldwin Avenue, Makawao, HI 96768
In a very nice courtyard with tables around a great tree is a relaxed setting for lunch. Our favorite here is a light gourmet lunch featuring great salads from local farm fare with some fresh fish on the side. Soup and sandwiches are always special. A great surprise for a Thursday night is a seven course tasting dinner under the attentive eye of the chef. That starts at 6PM. It is $60 and requires a reservation. 572-4877.

Makawao Steak House
3612 Baldwin Avenue, Makawao, HI 96768
When veteran Maui restaurateurs Michael and Dana Pastula of Cafe O’Lei fame purchased the Makawao Steak House last summer, they quickly put their signature on this Upcountry institution: quality food and service at affordable prices. Mosey on in and warm yourself by the fireplace while you sink your teeth into a seven-ounce filet of Midwestern beef that’s been charbroiled to perfection by Chef Orlando Acevedo, who believes in simplicity: season steaks with salt and pepper, and “Let the beef speak for itself.”

Polli’s*
Corner of Baldwin and Makawao Avenues
Everyone in our family loves Polli’s. If this restaurant were in Texas this would be “TexMex” but here it passes for Mexican food with some cowboy barbeque and steak always available. By either label it is good, reliable place to eat and meet the locals. The “specials” on Monday night are barbeque chicken, ribs and a “NY Strip Steak.” The NY Strip at $13.95 may be the best steak dinner on the island for the price. On Wednesday night the special is a fajita dinner for two for $19.95. Shrimp fajitas always rock and the fish tacos are a solid choice for lunch or dinner. Don’t forget to try one of the special margarita concoctions—only found a Polli’s.
